MASSPIRG Education Fund Staff
Deirdre works to protect and enhance consumer rights, reduce the cost and improve the delivery of health care, and promote government transparency and accountability. Deirdre has often testified before legislative and administrative committees on public policy proposals and initiatives related to auto and health insurance, health care and prescription drug costs, tax policy and specifically policies aimed at closing tax loopholes, promoting government spending transparency, making tax expenditures more transparent, accountable and efficient. In addition, Deirdre oversees the Consumer Action Center in Weymouth which mediates consumer complaints and recovers approximately $130,000 a year to local victims of unfair, illegal or deceptive retail transactions. In the past, she has organized several ballot initiative campaigns, including one to shut down two nuclear power plants in MA, one to prevent corporations from spending money on ballot campaigns and one to improve recycling in the Commonwealth. Deirdre graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with a B.S. in Consumer Economics, and has worked for MASSPIRG since 1986. She currently lives in Maynard with her family and is a soccer coach and an active member on the Maynard Youth Soccer Board.
